Apart from various visits by groups of veterans there are a number of memorial services each year and the British High Commission encourages veterans, tourists and expats to attend:

IPOH - Second weekend in June

There are a number of different events taking place during this weekend and the chief co-coordinator is Dato Pillay rtpmani@streamyx.com   

0n Friday 09.00 am. At the Cenotaph to remember the fallen in WW 1 and 2 and the Malaya Emergency and Confrontation. Followed by a reception in the railway hotel opposite sponsored by well wishers and co-ordinated by Dato Pillay.

On Saturday morning at 0730, a Church Service and wreath laying at Batu Gajah dedicated to those who lost their lives during the "Emergency". This event normally begins at 0730. It is sponsored by The Malaysian Palm Oil Association (Perak Branch) and co-ordinated by Mr Sivalingham 012 521 5053. Those attending are invited afterwards for refreshments at the Church.

“ Gods Little Acre”

 At 1030, a service and wreath laying at the Gurkha Cemetery in Sulva Lines to remember those Gurkhas who lost their lives in the defence of Malaya and Malaysia. Organised by Dato Pillay with support from the Commanding Officer, Royal Ranger Regiment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1230 to 1430, a hosted lunch at the Ipoh Club.

  1900 to 2300, "Troops Night" for veterans at the Royal Perak Golf Club co-ordinated by Dato Pillay and hosted by local Malaysian businessmen. This began a few years ago when local businessmen noticed a veteran queuing up to pay for a meal voucher having travelled half way around the world to attend the services. Since that time they have generously sponsored this lively night with live music.

On Sunday morning at 0900, a multi-religious service by four different priests representing Christians, Sikhs, Muslims. Gurkhas and Hindus who fell in WW 2 at Kampar, Trolak and Slim River sectors in the state of Perak. Organised by Dato Pillay with the support of Khalsa Diwan Malaysia.

Veterans Day (UK) 27th June

A national celebration of the contribution made by all those who have served in the armed forces

Sandakan, Sabah - 15 August

On 14 August at 4.30pm, a BBQ style reception for veterans and VIPs at the residence of the President of the Sandakan Municipal Council.

On 15 August at 7.am a service and wreath laying ceremony to remember those British and Australian POWs who lost their lives at the Sandakan POW Camp, on the Death Marches and at Ranau. The service and wreath laying is followed by refreshments in the memorial grounds of the Sandakan POW Camp. These events are sponsored by the local Sandakan Council and the co-ordinator Catherin.Chua@sabah.gov.my

Kundasang, Sabah - 17 August

  • At 0830, a service and wreath laying in the memorial gardens to remember the 641 British Servicemen who lost their lives at Sandakan, on the death marches and at Ranau. The service and refreshments afterwards is sponsored by the British High Commission with the full support of Mr Sevee Charurucks MBE who restored and continues to run the Memorial Gardens. The event is co-ordinated by the Defence Section.

  • Kuching, Sarawak - 7th November

    A memorial service will be held to remember all those who gave their lives in the Defence of Sarawak including the "Confrontation". The day is sponsored by the local government of Kuching.     Penang - 11th November

    A yearly event held on the 11th November at the Penang Cenotaph. In 2008 a rededication ceremony, for the 86 year old memorial, ensured it would continue as a tribute to the "glorious dead". Contact Penang Veterans Society 04 657 7199 e mail pva2001@tm.net.my

    Remembrance Sunday (second Sunday in November)

    In Kuala Lumpur at the National War Memorial, a service of remembrance with wreath laying starting at 0800. Those attending are invited back to the British High Commissioner's residence for breakfast. Sponsored by the British High Commission and co-ordinated by the Defence Section.

    In Labuan at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, multi-religious services by faith and wreath laying starting at 1030.  All those attending are invited to a hosted lunch after the event at a venue to be advised.  The event is sponsored by Labuan Tourism and co-ordinated by Willie Teo: wteo@tm.net.my
