Royal Navy photos

Photo from John Norman taken returning to Singapore from a patrol in the Singapore Straits in 1965. It is probably the last photo of her available, H.M.S.ICKFORD is a sister ship and H.M.S.CAMBERFORD was armed with twin .303 Vickers Port & Starboard midships and a 40mm Bofor and a .303 Bren gun up on the bows.

The first is a picture of a 'lady' of the night c1971 and the second HMS Chichester, as part of the 29th Escort Squadron which included HMS Plymouth (Captain D) and HMS Cambrian at the same time, and on which I served in Singapore/Malaysia in 1965. Happy days!!

	HMS EXETER
	The fateful day on Sunday March 1st 1942 St David's Day Efforts were made to bring the ship back into the action but to no avail. We were now a sitting target for the Japanese. There were several more explosions and eventually the order was given to abandon ship. I went up on deck and 'Exeter' was beginning to list to starboard. I jumped over the side and while we were in the water we watched her list further to starboard and sink to the bottom of the Java Sea. Our 2 escorts were also sunk.
	Several hours later we were picked up by a Japanese destroyer and taken to the island of Celebes where we were incarcerated in a prison camp for 3½ years from which many never returned.

	A couple of miles out of Johore Bahru on Jalan Skudai - our home from home for our first few days in 1964.
