About the Pingat Jasa Malaysia
The Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) is a special medal of service to eligible Australian Service personnel who served from Independence until the end of the Confrontation in the security of Malaysia, with the Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve, during the period 31 August 1957 and 31 December 1966 inclusive.
Categories of eligibility
Category 1
(a) Those members of the Australian Defence Force who were on the posted strength of a unit or formation and served in the prescribed operational area of Malaysia and Singapore, in direct support of operations in Malaysia for 90 days or more, in the aggregate, as follows:
(1) Malaysia during the period 31 August 1957 and 31 December 1966 inclusive; or
(2) Singapore during the period 31 August 1957 and 9 August 1965 inclusive.
 
Qualifying service between 12 August 1966 and 31 December 1966 may only apply if a member was posted for operations to Malaysia on or before 12 August 1966.

(b) Those members of the Australian Defence Force who were on the posted strength of a unit or formation outside of the

prescribed operational area above, but served in a secondary role in indirect support of operations in Malaysia for 180 days or more, in the aggregate, during the period 31 August 1957 and 31 December 1966 inclusive. (This is seagoing service with HMA Ships allotted to the Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve.)

 (c) Those Australian citizens who served in a civilian law enforcement capacity (police, home guard or security services) in the prescribed operational area of Malaysia only, in direct support of operations in Malaysia for 90 days or more, in the aggregate, during the period 31 August 1957 to 31 December 1966 inclusive.

 Category 2
Qualifying service during the period 31 August 1957 and 12 August 1966 inclusive, as described in Category One, may be
deemed to have been established notwithstanding a member of the Australian Defence Force has not met the qualifying period described if service was terminated due to the death, evacuation due to illness or injury or other disability due to service.
 Verification of service
Although the PJM is a foreign award from the Government of Malaysia, alll applications for the PJM will need to undergo a verification process by the Department of Defence in Australia to ensure that all information provided is true and correct. This process can be greatly assisted by applicants providing as much information about their service as possible, including service numbers, dates served in the prescribed area, etc. This will allow applications be finalised much faster.
Instructions on how to complete this form
·    Posthumous and unclaimed Medals or Awards for deceased ex-serving members will be issued in accordance with the    order of entitlement as follows:
 (a) Beneficiary under Will                                                                          (g) Brother or Sister
(b) Widow or Widower                                                                               (h) Half-brother or Half-sister
(c) Son or Daughter                                                                                     (i) Nephew or Niece
(d) Stepson or Stepdaughter                                                                       (i) Other person named as Next of Kin
(e) Grandson or Granddaughter                                                                       in official records
(f) Father or Mother
 ·         This form must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace or other authorised person. A full list of these persons is provided on the following page titled 'Certification of Documents'.
·           Applications will be processed in order of receipt and are subject to verification by the Department of Defence (See   'Documents required for verification of service'.)

 Certification of Documents

  • The Application for the Posthumous Issue of the Pingat Jasa Malaysia is a Statutory Declaration, and so must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or other authorised person.

  • A Statutory Declaration under the Statutory Declarations Act 1959 as amended may be made before:

  • Part 1 - Members of certain professions
    ·           Chiropractor
    ·           Dentist
    ·           Legal practitioner
    ·           Medical practitioner
    ·           Nurse
    ·           Patent attorney
    ·           Pharmacist
    ·           Veterinary surgeon
    Part 2 - Other persons
    ·         Agent of the Australian Postal Corporation who is in charge of an office supplying postal services to the public;
    ·         Australian Consular Officer, or Australian Diplomatic Officer, (within the meaning of the Consular Fees Act 1985);
    ·         Bailiff;
    ·         Bank officer with five or more continuous years service;
    ·         Building Society officer with five or more years of continuous service;
    ·         Chief executive officer of a Commonwealth court;
    ·         Civil marriage celebrant;
    ·         Clerk of a court;
    ·         Commissioner for Affidavits;
    ·         Commissioner for Declarations;
    ·         Credit union officer with five or more years of continuous service;
    ·         Holder of a statutory office not specified in another item in this part;
    ·         Judge of a court;
    ·         Justice of the Peace;
    ·         Magistrate;
    ·         Master of a court;
    ·         Member of the Australian Defence Force who is an officer; or a non-commissioned officer within the meaning of the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982 with five years or more continuous service; or warrant officer within the meaning of that act;
    ·         Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants or the National Institute of Accountant;
    ·         Member of the Institute of Corporate Managers, Secretaries and Administrators;
    ·         Member of the Institute of Engineers, Australia, or other than at grade of student;
    ·         Member of the Parliament of the Commonwealth; or the Parliament of a State; or a Territory legislature; or a local government authority of a State or Territory;
    ·         Minister of religion registered under Division 1 of Part IV of the Marriage Act 1961;
    ·         Notary public;
    ·         Permanent employee of the Commonwealth or of a Commonwealth authority; or a State or Territory authority; or a local government authority; with five or more years of continuous service who is not specified in another item in this Part;
    ·         Permanent employee of the Australian Postal Corporation with five or more years continuous service who is employed in an office supplying postal services to the public;
    ·         Person before whom a Statutory Declaration may be made under the law of the State or Territory in which the declaration is made;
    ·         Police Officer;
    ·         Registrar, or Deputy Registrar, or a court;
    ·         Senior Executive Service officer of the Commonwealth, or of a State or Territory, or of a Commonwealth, State or Territory authority;
    ·         Sheriff;
    ·         Sheriff's officer; or
    ·         Teacher employed on a full-time basis at a school or tertiary education institution.
