(Friday, July 21) Naval vet George finally gets his medal
ROYAL Naval veteran George Fleming has become the first Northern Ireland man to receive a medal for serving in Malaysia over 30 years ago.
The 18-month campaign for veterans of the Malaysian Emergency to receive a medal from the nation's present government has finally borne fruit for those who risked their lives in the 1950s and 1960s.

Mr Fleming was the only naval representative at the event on Wednesday at the Malaysian High Commission in London.
He received the Pingat Jasa Malaysia medal alongside 40 other veterans of the conflict, including former Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Lord Bramall, Prince Philip's private secretary Brigadier Sir Miles Hunt-Davies, three generals and three Military Cross winners.
As Mr Fleming explained, many of the veterans fought back tears as they received their medals from the Malaysian deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak.
"We had a wonderful time and it was a great afternoon,'' he said.
"It was terrific. It's a lovely medal. Some of the guys had tears in their eyes as they accepted it,'' he said.
On Wednesday, before he travelled to London, Mr Fleming was in the News Letter appealing for all Ulstermen who served in Malaysia to come forward because they may also be eligible for the Pingat Jasa Malaysia medal.
A new branch of the National Malaya Borneo Veterans' Association has been set up in the Province and is meeting on July 25 at Queen's University Officer Training Corps mess on Malone Road at 8pm.
Mr Fleming is keen to hear from any veterans who have not yet got in touch with the organisation.
"There's loads more guys out there who are entitled to this medal as much as I am. They should get in touch with us or come along to the meeting,'' he added.
