Malayan Emergency Police Lieutenants Roy
Follows & Noel Dudgeon, bogged with their Willys jeep JA 6178 near the
Thai-Burma border in 1958, and on their epic 17000km overland journey
home to the UK after they had completed their stints. The jeep had
been bought at a Singapore scrapyard, equipped with ration packs and
water, and with hand held compass' and obselete maps the only means of
navigation. Roy and Noel finally made it after many months and an
equal amount of close encounters, and their adventures published in
"Four Wheels & Frontiers" by Roy Follows.

A year 2000 thumb sketch of the old
1955-61 RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) operational HQ & Base area
during the Malayan Emergency. Down from the west roundabout and
past Padang Polo (now Golf) and the Sungai KK bridge and although
abandoned and overgrown and fast encroach on by tenaments as in 2000 -
the entry point off Jalan Kenas (Bruas Rd), the old guard room
step, camp loop road, the stairway to the C Coy lines (in scrub) and the
old tree by the HQ & Armskote as well as some ablution tanks were
still identifiable and recognised. But as the campsite is now
completely shielded by thick overgrowth, this as at the time, the entry
point at the 2km mark must be looked for. The old Police Station
& Rex Theatre north of the clock tower still stand, but the Cathay
Theatre & Queens Bar approx 200m east from the roundabout, have been
demolished for warehouse and shop use. Rough Scale:
Camp Site - Perak River 2.5km.

camp road 40 years apart!
